English Language Paper 2 key information

PAPER 2

The whole paper is 1 hour 45 minutes.

Section A – Reading 2 non-fiction texts

Q1 (4 marks) – True or false – select 4

This should be completed in under 5 minutes.

Q2 (8 marks) – compare the events in the two texts. Write in SQI format –what do you learn? No language analysis, just SQI – statement – quotation – infer (prove you get/have read the texts basically!)

This should be completed in 10 minutes

Q3 (12 marks)– Language analysis – 3 x FEAR (feature, evidence, analysis, reader). You must zoom in on key word meanings and use language devices to explain how the text is written to interest the reader.

This should be completed in 15 minutes.

Q4 (16 marks) – compare the viewpoints of the authors – FEAR on both viewpoints. This is a comparative question which asks you to look at similarities and/or differences. You need to use the same skills as Q3 but compare the two sources at the same time. Cross-referencing would be excellent here. Remember to use connectives to compare and contrast.

This should be completed in 20 minutes.

Section B

Q5 (40 marks) – WRITING TO PERSUADE/ARGUE – could be a task to write in the form of a letter, speech or article. Use RAINFOREST techniques to develop your response. Check your SPAG, make sure you paragraph. You response should be biased.

You should complete this in 45 minutes. We suggest you answer this first.
