Example Question 5
You have been asked to produce a creative piece of writing for a magazine.
The magazine is popular with people of your own age.
Either:
Write a description suggested by this picture
OR
Write the opening part of a story about a place that is...
24 marks for communication and organisation
16 marks for technical accuracy
TIPS
Look at the wording of the question. ‘Suggested by the picture’ means you do not have to write a full description of the picture itself. You could take one aspect of it and use that as inspiration for a descriptive piece. The picture is meant as a starting point. If you have another idea, run with it, as long as you have taken at least one part of the picture to include in your work.
If you are writing a story, use dialogue VERY sparingly. It is difficult to pick up marks if you use it because you are not showing off your skills in the best way. It is difficult to use language devices if you are writing an entire conversation.
AO5
• Communicate clearly, effectively and imaginatively, selecting and adapting tone, style and register for different forms, purposes and audiences.
• Org

AO6
• Candidates must use a range of vocabulary and sentence structures for clarity, purpose and effect, with accurate spelling and punctuation.
REVISION TASKS
The image below is not ours but we highly recommend this activity to improve your writing. This has been completed for you as an example of how you can creatively up-level your sentences for effect.

You may also want to find an image to re-visit your descriptive/narrative skills. You can create your own questions using the above structure for any image. Consider how you can manipulate your language for effect!
