Question 2— FEAR Spend 10 minutes—8 marks

How does the writer use language in each example to show Shmuel’s feelings in lines 1-9? [8 marks] Consider - Words and phrases - Sentence forms - Language devices
Look for sentence forms to enhance mood and description.
Time constraints dictate that analysis should be concise: avoid overlong explanations, analysis.
You need to identify techniques and explain the effect concisely. EG Verb + effect You need to know and be able to refer to the basic parts of a sentence quickly: noun, verb, adjective, adverb, pronoun. You must use subject terminology. Sentence forms is a very difficult, possibly tenuous, area: look for short sentences for impact and complex to expand description / build momentum?

Question 3— Structure Spend 10 minutes, 8 marks

Justify a response to a statement and explain how this is conveyed in text
Use quotations to explain why character or setting is effective. Refer to language and structure and how it brings text alive. Students need to think about why a text is structured in this way – what is the focus and why?
Look for patterns of images (repetition, contrasts..) and movement in a text (in–out, zoom in or out, journeys, change of focus..)
Subject terminology is more difficult for structure: Sequence: opening, middle, conclusion, zooms in or out, focus Shifts: narrative perspective, pattern, motif, contrast, repeated…
